Sometimes people choose to remodel parts of their home to raise the value for selling it, but quite often people choose to do home improvement because they don’t like what they’ve bought, or they are tired of the way their home looks and want something new. According to the 2019 Remodeling Impact Report, American’s spend $400 billion every year on remodeling their homes. One thing’s for certain, everyone wants to end up with a final result that they love. Last year the National Association of Realtors calculated a “Joy Score” for typical home remodeling projects. Based on the amount of happiness homeowners reported after their renovations were completed, the highest score they could give, in terms of being pleased with their end result, was a 10.
The poll showed that 74% of homeowners reported having a greater desire to be at home, 65% said they experienced increased enjoyment and 58% said they felt happy every time they see their completed projects. Home improvement projects provided 77% of people with a major sense of accomplishment and 38% said they had a feeling of satisfaction, even when they hadn’t done any of the work themselves.
Let’s look at some of the projects that gave the most joy. Because these were the projects that made people have a greater desire to be at home.
A complete kitchen renovation scored the highest Joy Score possible with a score of 10. And of those polled 93% said they desired being at home more. Forty six percent of people said the most important end result of a kitchen renovation is improved livability and functionality. Whether it’s to replace worn out countertops surfaces or upgrade old-fashion looking cabinets, it doesn’t take much to make your kitchen look so much better. Ultimately, many people who move into a home really want to customize the kitchen to their own particular taste. The kitchen is typically the heart of the house with family and friends often gathering there, so it’s no wonder homeowners want it to reflect their personal style.
A Fresh Coat of Paint
Next to score high on the Joy Score with a total of 9.8 points, was a full interior paint job. A fresh coat of paint makes a home’s interior feel brand new! Because it’s visible in every room in the house, it’s important the job is done right. A vast majority of those people polled, a total of 88% of them, said they have a greater sense of happiness being at home since it was freshly painted, and 86% said they feel a major sense of accomplishment from having had that project done.
Most people encounter their closet at the start of every day, and it causes so much stress to have to deal with a disorganized closet when you are in a hurry to get to work. So that’s a major reason why upgrading home closets received a Joy Score of 10 in the survey. The sense of accomplishment is immediate when a closet renovation is complete. Functionality, with improved storage and organization is the top reason 54% of people polled said they wanted a closet renovation.
A New Front Door
Talk about curb appeal. Your front door is first thing guests see when they come to your home, and it’s often your own first experience of arriving home as well. Homeowners gave a Joy Score of 9.7 specifically for having a new fiberglass front door installed. But a new steel front door also garnered a 9.7 Joy Score, both due to improved energy efficiency. Combine that with a full exterior paint job and you’ve got a whole new-looking home to drive up to!
Adding a New Bathroom or Renovating a Bathroom
With a Joy Score of 9.2 consumers felt that adding a new bathroom provided better functionality and livability to their home. Most look to do a bathroom remodeling project in order to add new features like a sunken bathtub or glassed in stand-up shower. When it comes to modernizing an older home, one of the places it becomes most obvious is in the bathroom, especially with the array of gorgeous tile and stone available today.
